Ask the Kitchen Lady
You've always wanted an unconventional kitchen, but no one supports your vision and you worry it might be a mistake. So your avant-garde red, yellow, green, black; clear glass or floating shelves only;  rustic and weathered with skirted trough sink; all hammered stainless; rippled or textured; 2-tone motif or off-beat accent cabinet; backlit glass counters;  toekick and cove lights kitchen lives on only in your imagination. What is really stopping you from realizing your dream? In my experience, here are the key underlying hurdles, both practical and emotional, for you to ponder. Is your worry really a... 1) Lack of confidence in your vision? It isn't easy being a rebel. Your support network may not be on your side on this one. Perhaps your family or friends encourage you with the half- hearted phrase "well, if that's what you really want."  I say "go for it!" I admire the vision and promise of your dream kitchen. It will be spectacular! As long as it has the magic ingredient. 2) Concern that your home will lose resale value? People look at a "safe" beige and white residence for sale, designed to offend no one, and often feel, well, they feel nothing at all and move on. A few shoppers with imagination evaluate the home's space and flow, planning how they can bring their own ideas to this pallid palette, and keep looking. In contrast, your unique, high-impact residence instills a reaction. While it may not be for everyone, it will intrigue an important few who will compete to make your home theirs. As long as it has the magic ingredient. 3) Uncertainty over why this design concept is appealing to you? If you didn't grow up with a kitchen like the one you propose or sometime in the past "oohed" over it in a magazine, then just where did this idea come from and why has it taken hold in your imagination? I pose this question, but I'm not sure it matters. And I am not sure it is knowable. But since it is important to you at some "deep" level, I encourage you to remain true to it. As long as it has the magic ingredient. Keep in mind...with the proper lighting, black kitchens can be amazing!! Brightly colored high gloss cabinets can be cheerful and immaculate! Unexpected colors and combos can be charming! In fact, with one essential ingredient, your unique kitchen concept is a true winner. And that is "taste." Good design triumphs over all.

Tip: Risk vs.

Reward

TRUE STORY:  A client wanted a signature color kitchen--hot pink. Her decision was well thought out and decisive.  When completed, she threw a housewarming party. The reaction of several dozen friends and family in her words was "jaw-dropping." She never wavered in her vision. She is a woman of valor. Her kitchen came out great! Yours will too.
